All our
laws, traditions and the reasons we do certain things certain ways as a society
are the legacy of our history and earlier generations. A legacy is anything that is handed down to a person or culture from an
ancestor, predecessor or an earlier era. Something as simple as the colour of
your hair and eyes can be considered a legacy from your ancetors.
Ireland has a very rich legacy which, while many outside Ireland know little
about, has had an influence not only on life in Ireland but around the world.
One simple example is the word used the world over for the wedding night.
Honeymoon comes from an Irish tradition when people lived in castles (
you have to read it yourself!
).
The history, its political roots and even the meaning behind a country's flag
all form part of the legacy has been handed down and will be handed down to
generations yet to come.
